A nutritionist’s voyage through life

Kitchen Problems

February 8th, 2009 Filed under: Stuff by admin

As a nutritionist and a mother, preparing the right food with the proper nutrition for my son, Justin is quite a task. Along with the preparation is washing of the dishes afterwards. Doing this the quickest time possible would greatly ease the pressure of getting household chores done for the day. Things really go awry when I encounter mechanical, electrical problems with the dishwasher. Since my husband, Mark is at work the rest of the day. Relying on him to do the task is far from possible so I resort to surfing the net and educate myself on quickest way to fix it. Or sometimes I observe my husband when he does ever get the chance to fix the dishwasher and take a mental note of it so in case I encounter such problems, fixing it could then be as easy as baking a pie.

Of course if I can not really handle the problem calling a technician would be my last resort. Aside from the dishwasher there is the plumbing whenever the sink gets clogged. Or the light doesn’t work or the kitchen door or drawer could be stuck. Learning to do things myself has greatly increased my capability as a mother and a wife. However, it gets overwhelming at times since I do have my job too, and to come home with trouble in the kitchen is a tall thing to do. But who else can do all that in your own home but you since you are the only who is there, waiting for your husband till he gets home let all of you end up to nothing.

Till Next Year Santa

January 8th, 2009 Filed under: Holidays by admin

I am a young mother of two active little boys. Oh, I forgot, Justin is my son and the other one is my husband, Mark. My husband’s favorite time of the year is the holidays simply because he has loved snow and he was very excited to see if our son would enjoy it as much as he does. Justin took to it like a fish to water.

Spending the last two months preparing for the holidays, I was glad that my work as a nutritionist gives me some time to handle all the things that need to be bought and made. Mark loves home cooked meals since his mother also cooked their Christmas Eve feast. Our Justin would have to eat food for his age so I am making him a special meal for that time.

After the blur that was the Christmas morning gift opening and the family reunions during New Year’s Eve, we finally got around to putting the tree down. Mark did this with an almost melancholic mood, one which now our Justin mirrors. I promised them both that Santa would surely come back next year. Justin beamed and Mark hugged me. So you see the holidays would always be a big thing in out home.

But what they don’t say is how hard it can be to the women who have to put everything together. I was tired for so many nights wrapping gifts, keeping on a budget and making the food.

So you would have to forgive me if I dread next year’s holidays.

What I Want For Christmas

December 18th, 2008 Filed under: Holidays by admin

Christmas is the holiday that my husband and my son always look forward to. It is the time where we can visit family since my husband and I are so busy with our respective works. We seldom get the time to see our families. Much as we are excited seeing our families again, Christmas is an exciting time to get presents for your family as well as to receive one from them too.  Last year, I got a new iMac from Mark. It was so lovely and it really helps me get my research easier as a nutritionist. But this season, what I want for Christmas is a new 3G iPhone. I would be lovely to get this new phone. It was difficult for me to get one when it was launch last July 17, 2008. Considering the hitches that might occur for the first batch of 3G iPhone because it did happen in the first iphone it is wiser to wait a little before getting one. So now I would prefer this next batch of 3G iphone since I believe it is already free for the troubleshooting. And it would be a good time to have this new item now this Christmas. Fashion really gets me and sometime, it will not here to indulge yourself a little especially if there is an occasion to have one or that let you get one. So for this holiday, it is something that I am dying to have.

Christmas Stress

December 8th, 2008 Filed under: Holidays by admin

Being a mother of a bouncing baby boy in his toddler years, a wife to a busy businessman while doing clinic hours trying to convince women that they can enjoy their holiday feasts without having to break their diet is very stressful. The problem with the yuletide season is that we often think that this is the time we can go on a break on our regular eating habits. If you are on a diet throughout the year and you stop doing that during the holiday then it is like taking one step forward then taking two back.

In my case, I love to cook so it was hard for me to tell my husband and my son to stop eating when they are already full. So what I opted to do is to keep the food on our table as healthy and as balanced as I possibly can.

So this Christmas I plan to make my table as colorful as possible. It is after all the best way to get all the antioxidants if you get all the five colors into the food that you eat. Red, orange, yellow, green and blue are abundant in my salad, which my relatives love. Putting all organic on my table can be more costly than necessary. But at least my family and friends won’t feel guilty when they try the dessert cakes that I would make.

So why not try doing the same thing. It might take more time that before but once you hear the praises all the Christmas stress you have accumulated would fade with your family’s smile.

The Things I Need

November 8th, 2008 Filed under: Stuff by admin

In this modern world of technology, gadgets are already part of daily routines and also life’s activity. And for me as a working mother, there two are gadgets I could not do without. These are my iMac and my iPod. Yes, as a nutritionist, I do most of my planning, researching in my iMac. It is like my personal assistant. It keeps my work handy most of the time especially when I do my planning and organizing technical stuff. Sometimes, I also bring my work at home especially when inevitable things happen like I have to prepare for a certain meetings and I needed more time in my presentation. Bringing work at home at times like this is considerable for Mark and Justin. It is like my career is already packed in this device, everything that has got to do with my work has been inside it already.

My iPod is another thing I couldn’t sleep without. Aside from being a music lover, with so many things going on in my head from the pressures at work plus juggling it with my responsibility and commitment in my family, sleeping can be hard at times. So my iPod serves me best when I am about to get ready in bed. It is like my lullaby. One time at night when the battery got busted, I could hardly sleep, so I turned on the stereo all night long so I could put myself to sleep while Mark had trouble sleeping on the other hand. We are just simply opposite with our sleeping habits.

Family Vacation

October 27th, 2008 Filed under: Family by admin

Mark is a workaholic type of person. He is truly busy at work and seldom gets a day off. However despite his busy schedules, he does think about spending time with us his family. Right now he is contemplating for a family vacation and we have been searching in the internet a good place to have vacation as family. Justin is our only child, age 7, and we love to bring them to places where he gets to enjoy. Mark is also and outdoor type of person, so that is one thing also that we need to consider in finding a place. He hates to be confined in a hotel or just in touring in shopping centers or museums. As for me, what makes Mark and Justin happy, I would always go for it.

So we thought of going to Orlando, Florida this time. The place is good for family vacation. It has nice beaches and family parks that any family would surely love and enjoy. You have so many tourist places to choose. There is this Busch Garden which is a great theme park that the whole family would really enjoy, Sea World is also famous for its marine adventure park that I’m sure my son would love. Also the Island of Adventure is something that Justin and Mark would like to see for its amazing rides, and of course the Universal Studios where Justin is thrilled to see the studious where he gets to fly with his favorite superheroes.

Birthday Prep

October 1st, 2008 Filed under: Family by admin

Having an only child makes you sometimes lavished him all the attention and things that he would want. My son Justin is no exception to that. He does get the attention that my husband Mark and I can give him and that includes also some things he wished to have together with the kind of birthday party he wants to have too. For this year, Justin wants a costume birthday party. He is so crazy about the Dark Knight movie, so again, we will have a repeat of his first birthday party where we had a superhero costume party. But since he is already seven, there are demands of some details of his theme party. So Mark and I are some kind of serious in his birthday preparation.  Justin likes to invite his entire class so that is something that we have to consider in the preparation. You know kids are particular of the details of the party and since Justin is spending time with them like 5 days a week, we don’t want him to be laughed at by his own party. So this party must be spectacular and awesome in the eyes of the children.

Kids this age are a little choosy of the foods and not much an eater when attending parties, so my husband and I are thinking of giving them more party goodies and lots of kiddie games that would make these little superheroes use their powers in winning the games. Being a nutritionist too, I thought of giving them some healthy finger foods like real chicken nuggets, fish strips fried in vegetable oil and this come along with dip in cheese fondue. Chips can be allowed at this occasion so I reconsider of ordering bags of chips that have at least value in it.
